Straw-men and selective citation are needed to argue that associative-link formation makes no contribution to human learning.Dominic M. Dwyer, Michael E. Le Pelley, David N. George, Mark Haselgrove & Robert C. Honey - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (2):206-207.
Mitchell et al. contend that there is no need to posit a contribution based on the formation of associative links to human learning. In order to sustain this argument, they have ignored evidence which is difficult to explain with propositional accounts; and they have mischaracterised the evidence they do cite by neglecting features of these experiments that contradict a propositional account.

Visualizing and quantifying cell phenotype using soft X‐ray tomography.Gerry McDermott, Douglas M. Fox, Lindsay Epperly, Modi Wetzler, Annelise E. Barron, Mark A. Le Gros & Carolyn A. Larabell - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (4):320-327.
Soft X‐ray tomography (SXT) is an imaging technique capable of characterizing and quantifying the structural phenotype of cells. In particular, SXT is used to visualize the internal architecture of fully hydrated, intact eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells at high spatial resolution (50 nm or better). Image contrast in SXT is derived from the biochemical composition of the cell, and obtained without the need to use potentially damaging contrast‐enhancing agents, such as heavy metals. The cells are simply cryopreserved prior to imaging, and (...)

Logical laws for short existential monadic second-order sentences about graphs.M. E. Zhukovskii - 2019 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 20 (2):2050007.
In 2001, Le Bars proved that there exists an existential monadic second-order sentence such that the probability that it is true on [Formula: see text] does not converge and conjectured that, for EMSO sentences with two first-order variables, the zero–one law holds. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture fails for [Formula: see text], and give new examples of sentences with fewer variables without convergence.

    Understanding and the Emotions.J. M. E. Moravcsik - 1982 - Dialectica 36 (2‐3):207-224.
SummaryWe need to classify emotions as objectual and non‐objectual. Some of the objectual emotions are dependent on the characterizations of their objects. So in these cases reason guides the emotions. But there are also other cases in which the conceptual dependency goes the other way. in the case of aesthetic judgments and certain types of judgments involving purpose, or compassion, the ability to make these judgments is dependent on being in certain emotional states. Thus in some cases emotions aid and (...)

In view of the aging and dejuvenation of the working population and the expected shortages in employees’ skills in the future, it is of utmost importance to focus on older workers’ employability in order to prolong their working life until, or even beyond, their official retirement age. The primary aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between elderly workers’ employability (self-)perceptions and their intention to continue working until their official retirement age. In addition, we studied the role (...)

    “On the plausibility of nonstandard proofs in analysis”.M. E. Szabo E. J. Farkas - 1984 - Dialectica 38 (4):297-310.
SummaryWe present a systematic discussion of the structural and conceptual simplifications of proofs of standard theorems afforded by nonstandard methods and examine to what extent the resulting nonstandard proofs satisfy the informal criterion of “plausibility”. We introduce the concept of a “standard detour” and show that all nonstandard proofs considered avoid such detours. Among the proofs examined are proofs of the Intermediate Value Theorem, the Riemann Integration Theorem, the Spectral Theorem for compact Hermitian operators, and the Arzela‐Ascoli Theorem.RésuméNous discutons systématiquement (...)

Updating standards for reporting diagnostic accuracy: the development of STARD 2015.Patrick M. M. Bossuyt, Lotty Hooft, Douglas G. Altman, Henrica C. W. de Vet, David Moher, Les Irwig, Paul P. Glasziou, Constantine A. Gatsonis, David E. Bruns, Johannes B. Reitsma, Jérémie F. Cohen & Daniël A. Korevaar - 2016 - Research Integrity and Peer Review 1 (1).
BackgroundAlthough the number of reporting guidelines has grown rapidly, few have gone through an updating process. The STARD statement (Standards for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy), published in 2003 to help improve the transparency and completeness of reporting of diagnostic accuracy studies, was recently updated in a systematic way. Here, we describe the steps taken and a justification for the changes made.ResultsA 4-member Project Team coordinated the updating process; a 14-member Steering Committee was regularly solicited by the Project Team when making critical (...)

Throughout the biological and biomedical sciences there is a growing need for, prescriptive ‘minimum information’ (MI) checklists specifying the key information to include when reporting experimental results are beginning to find favor with experimentalists, analysts, publishers and funders alike. Such checklists aim to ensure that methods, data, analyses and results are described to a level sufficient to support the unambiguous interpretation, sophisticated search, reanalysis and experimental corroboration and reuse of data sets, facilitating the extraction of maximum value from data sets (...)

Biological evolution provides a creative fount of complex and subtle adaptations, often surprising the scientists who discover them. However, because evolution is an algorithmic process that transcends the substrate in which it occurs, evolution’s creativity is not limited to nature. Indeed, many researchers in the field of digital evolution have observed their evolving algorithms and organisms subverting their intentions, exposing unrecognized bugs in their code, producing unexpected adaptations, or exhibiting outcomes uncannily convergent with ones in nature. Such stories routinely reveal (...)

Abstract. Following the tracks of Ryle and based upon the theory of complex systems, we shall develop a characterization of action-based consciousness as an embodied, embedded, selforganized process in which action and dispositions occupy a special place. From this perspective, consciousness is not a unique prerogative of humans, but it is spread all around, throughout the evolution of life. We argue that artificial systems such as robots currently lack the genuine embodied embeddedness that allows the type of self-organization that is (...)

[REVIEW]M. M. E. - 1966 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (2):367-368.
Gonseth's primary concern in this volume, as in his earlier study of space, is the methodology of philosophical investigation. How does the philosopher achieve thoroughness without introducing arbitrariness? His method of dialectical synthesis is aptly illustrated by focusing on a privileged example, the problem of time. Common language analysis of "time" words, his initial concern, gives a preliminary sketch of a solution by making explicit the intuitive view of time implicit in language. Language, however, is unintelligible apart from experience, while (...)

Vauvenargues is one of those authors we think we know without having read. Sidelined among the minor moralists, the texts he published are rarely considered rigorous and powerful. Hence we are endebted to Laurent Bove for having taken this thought seriously, and for having systematically brought into relief its most striking intellectual aspects. Vauvenargues himself asked his readers to “read slowly” (“lire doucement”)—a reading ethic that has finally been followed to the letter. Pascal also sought the right rhythm of reading, (...)
